Implementing and Using Tabbed Design in Summon Discovery Search System

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

At Glendale Community College, GCC Librarians developed a sophisticated tabbed search system for finding resources through the library discovery search interface. The tab & radio button search interface allows users to narrow their search results via front-end limiters in order to retrieve specific material formats and types of publications. After the system’s implementation, librarians gathered detailed statistics on how the system was being utilized by the user community revealing both surprising and illuminating results. In this presentation, librarians Sean O’Brien and Ed McKennon will discuss the mechanisms of implementation as well as findings associated with and changes made in light of user behavior data and heuristic evaluation of search interface and results. The presentation will discuss the benefits of tabbed search design in light of other design implementations.
